But as TheDCNF noted, the company's decision was criticized by an independent audit, commissioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which found it made "no serious or concrete investments in developing its mines."

Alcoa said the land had no prospect of mining, but instead had instead been "used to build infrastructure such as road and airport facilities."

"They are essentially destroying a land resource, and they should be investigated for that," said Koozer.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was disappointed with Alcoa's decision.

"The department takes the rights of indigenous peoples very seriously and has been working with them to facilitate access to the land," a spokesperson said.

DUBAI: The UAE government has taken a number of steps to combat air pollution on the country's roads, with construction projects to address the issue costing more than $2bn.

The Ministry of Environment is working to provide a road network with road-quality pavement at a cost of $1.1bn, state-run news agency WAM reported on Monday.

The $2bn project is part of the country's ambitious Road Development Plan (RDP) - the first major plan for modernizing road networks since the 1950s - which aims to cut traffic volumes by at least 30 per cent.
