DUBAI: The UAE government has taken a number of steps to combat air pollution on the country's roads, with construction projects to address the issue costing more than $2bn.

The Ministry of Environment is working to provide a road network with road-quality pavement at a cost of $1.1bn, state-run news agency WAM reported on Monday.

The $2bn project is part of the country's ambitious Road Development Plan (RDP) - the first major plan for modernizing road networks since the 1950s - which aims to cut traffic volumes by at least 30 per cent.

The RDP, which was launched back in 2007, calls for the construction of more than 4 million kilometres (2.2m miles) of paved roads, 1.5 million km of laneless highways, 7,000km of expressways and 15,000km of motorway roads and 5,000km of cycle tracks.

While the first phase of the plan focused on improving the UAE's roads, the last phase is due to roll-out on the nation's national road network by 2022, and has the potential to reduce air pollution in the country for decades to come.

Dubai has been among the countries hardest hit by pollution, with the worst air pollution in the world at over 900 micrograms of fine particulate matter per cubic metre - enough for about 100,000 premature deaths each year.

He also has a year of experience with Team Europcar who finished first in 2011 before becoming the first professional World Champion to race as a soloist at the 2013 Olympics in London, finishing the race fourth in 2:08:07 to beat World Champion Tom Veelers.

"I'm excited about the World Cup," said Buhl. "It's an exciting opportunity to take it all away from us and focus on the races. I'm looking forward to putting my skills to the test and giving my all for my team-mates."

Buhl joined Team Europcar in 2008 as a young rider and gained significant experience and momentum after winning the World Team classification.
